FISH question for week of 11-24-08
Recall the following scene from Report to the Principal’s Office:
“For some time after Mr. Brimlow said, “Dig in,” no one spoke. He decided to break the ice himself with a question to the Johnson boy. “So, Dennis, considering your nickname, you must be pretty fond of pickles, huh?”
Pickles had not folded his sloppy joe filling into a tortilla, Mexican style, as had the others. He has instead laid a tortilla falt on his plate and spread a layer of sloppy joe over it, creating a sort of small pizza. He cut the pie into neat, equal sized wedges.
“I hate pickles,” he said.
“Really?”
“Yeah. I think they’re neat-looking, and I like how the name sounds, but I can’t stand the taste. My mother was always giving me one with my sandwich. That’s why I put them on the Christmas tree, to get rid of them.”
Mr Brimlow filled in the other kids how Pickles got his name.
Salem snickered, “Good thing you didn’t decide to hate bananas.”
“Bananas Johnson,” giggled Eddie.
Trying to include Sunny Wyler, Mr. Brimlow said, “What kind of food would you hang on a Christmas tree, Miss Wyler, if you had to?”
FISH QUESTION:
If you could pick a food to hang on your Christmas tree, Hanukkah menorah, Kwanzaa kinara (candle holder), etc., what would it be and why? You must be able to explain your reason by connecting it to your life. You may not use the reason that Pickles used above. Make sure you use details to support your answer.

If I could hang any kind of food on my Christmas tree, it would be a clementine. (mini orange) I would chose to hang clementines on my tree because I think they have a very sweet smell, just like a Christmas tree. This fruit always seems to be in my fruit bowl. It would give the tree a whole new look considering it’s bright, vivid colors. They taste just as sweet as they smell. It is a perfect food to hang because if you want a tasty repast, you can just take a healthy snack right off the Christmas tree. That is why I would chose clementines to hang on my Christmas tree.
If I had to pick a food to hang on my christmas tree, I think I would pick cherries. I would put cherries on my christman tree for a couple of reasons. One is, they’re red and red is a holiday color. Plus, red cherries with a green tree equals good holiday spirit! Another reason why I would hang cherries on my tree is, cherries are small and cute, so I think that they would look very delicate and pretty if you put them on a christmas tree. Also, I really like the taste of cherries, so I could just walk by my christmas tree and grab a handful of cherries to have a delicious, healthy snack! Those are the reasons why I would put cherries on my christmas tree.
If I could hang any kind of food on my Christmas tree it would have to be rice crispy treats! Since they have marshmallow, it would make the tree look so pretty! It would probably make it gleam also! I make rice crispy treats all the time with my mom which is like a huge memory for me. This is how it connects to my life. In fact, last night I made rice crispy treats with my mom as we were decorating a “pretend” Christmas tree on the internet. They are so fragile that they would probably fall all over the Christmas tree making it even prettier! Maybe tonight I’ll go on the website again and put rice crispy teats on it!
If I could put any food on my Christmas tree I would put pizza because i enjoy it and i think it would look good on a Christmas tree. It relates to me because my family and I always get pizza on Friday. It is like a tradition in my family and if I put pizza on my tree it will remind me of all the good times we had when we ate dinner and pizza together. That is the reason why I would put pizza on my Christmas tree.
If I had to hang any food on my Christmas tree it would be corn dogs. Corn dogs make me sick to my stomach. One time, I was at this place cutting down my Christmas tree. At that place there was a snack stand and I tried a corn dog and I threw up. So now, every time I am sitting with my cousin at dinner she eats a corn dog. And it made me feel nausea.
If I had to choose one food item to place on my Christmas tree, I would probably choose bell peppers. I know this sounds like an odd food, but I would choose this for many reasons. First, their smell is absolutely perfect! You just can’t resist it…or at least I know I can’t! Also, there is diversity in their colors! It ranges from green to red. Yellow is somewhere in there also, so I would definitely use those too. You would be able to cut them in different shapes considering they are very limber and such. The vibrant colors would give the Christmas tree a special touch. You would be able to look around at my Christmas tree, and see different shapes and sizes. At the top, I would leave one whole. Probably a yellow one because of the brightness throughout it. Overal, that is what I would choose to put on my Christmas tree.
